By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) split saga continues to unfold following Wednesday’s exchange of attorney letters and press releases ahead of the June 14 National Party Council meeting.
The first development was that first deputy party leader Hugo Patt publicly called for a boycott after he claimed Acting Party Chairman Alberto August refused to postpone the meeting to have time to review the delegates list. Then, Moses “Shyne” Barrow intervened through his attorneys to reiterate that he is the leader of the UDP, had not followed through on an attempt to resign, and therefore is the true leader and not Patt. August’s response to Patt was published in which he called out his colleague for missing meetings and essentially declared that the NPC would go ahead.
On social media late Wednesday, August wrote, “The purpose of the June 14, 2025 Meeting of the NPC of the UDP is simply to package the UDP and hand it over to Tracy Panton and the new Leadership Executive of the UDP as a clarion call will be issued for unity within the UDP which has evaded us for over five years. Only those who want to see continued division within the UDP would seek to derail this process.”
It was immediately pointed out to him in comments below his post that such unity would of necessity involve current Leader of the Opposition Tracey Taegar-Panton, Senator Patrick Faber and others who participated in the now invalid October 2024 National Convention in Belize City. The UDP executive has demanded that these apologize if they are to be let back into the party. The court ruled in April that Taegar-Panton’s expulsion was not done properly with respect to due process but declined, for various reasons, to declare that she remains a member of the UDP.
