By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s silver-medal finish at the 2nd AFECAVOL Final 4 Men’s Volleyball Championship was made all the more memorable by the stellar performances of Francis Hauze and Hakan Godoy, who earned well-deserved individual accolades while helping lift the team to regional recognition.
Francis Hauze – 1st Best Attacker
Hauze’s attacking precision was a cornerstone of Belize’s offensive strategy. Hauze’s consistency earned him the top attacker distinction. His game awareness and explosive finishes set him apart as one of the region’s premier volleyball talents.
Hauze’s dominance in San Salvador came on the heels of an extraordinary collegiate season with Indiana’s Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Wave men’s volleyball team, where he was named 2024–25 Male Athlete of the Year. Dominating in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), he secured a place on the All-Conference First Team.
His brilliance translated seamlessly to the international stage, where he powered through regional defenses—including a fiery performance in Belize’s thrilling five-set duel against Guatemala (25-22, 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 11-15) and their victory over El Salvador (3-1: 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19).
Hakan Godoy – 2nd Best Blocker
On the defensive front, Godoy stood firm. His timing and resilience at the net anchored Belize’s defense across all three matches, especially during the straight-set win over Nicaragua (25-16, 25-19, 25-21). The second-best blocker title is a reflection of his disciplined approach and vital role in shutting down opposing offenses.
Silver and Honours for Belize
The Belizean squad ended the championship with a 2-1 record, defeating El Salvador (3-1: 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) and Nicaragua decisively, while putting up a strong fight in their lone loss to eventual champions Guatemala (3-0).
Final Standings
Guatemala (3-0)
Belize (2-1)
Nicaragua (1-2)
El Salvador (0-3)
Hauze and Godoy certainly left their mark at the regional tournament. Their achievements speak volumes about Belize’s growing strength in regional volleyball and the bright future that lies ahead for these standout athletes.
Note: The Belize Men’s National Volleyball Team are expected to arrive home later on Monday after facing significant travel delays. Their journey along the InterAmerican Highway in Guatemala was impacted by road blockades staged by the Guatemala National Teachers Union, who continue to protest for educational reforms. Despite the setback, the players and coaching staff remain in high spirits following their commendable performance and well-earned accolades at the AFECAVOL Final 4 Championship.
