By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Adriana Ruano Oliva made history on Wednesday by winning Guatemala’s first-ever gold medal and Central America’s third at the Olympic Games.

Ruano won hold in the shooting competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She led throughout the Trap Women’s Final, setting an Olympic record with 45 successful shots out of 50. She outperformed Italy’s Silvana Maria Stanco, who finished second, by five clear shots. Penny Smith of Australia claimed the bronze medal.

“I thank God and my father who is in heaven,” Ruano Oliva said immediately after winning the gold medal.

Prior to Ruano’s gold, Guatemala previously only won two Olympic medals – a silver in the men’s 20 km race walk by Érick Barrondo at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze by Jean Pierre Brol Cárdenas in the men’s trap shooting event at Paris 2024 one day before.

Ruano’s is a story of perseverance as she had to abandon her first love, gymnastics, due to injury. The forced switch to shooting couldn’t have turned out better for the Guatemalan competitor.

Prior to Guatemala’s gold, the Central American countries had only won two gold medals at the Olympics. Costa Rica’s Claudia Poll claimed the first gold in the women’s 200m freestyle swimming at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Then, 12 years later, Panama’s Irving Saladino won gold in the men’s long jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
