By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a shocking courtroom twist, accused triple murderer Elmer Nah fired his attorney, prominent Belizean lawyer Godfrey Smith, during a High Court session on Thursday.
Nah, who appeared virtually from his cell at the Belize Central Prison, informed the court that he is now represented by Trinidadian attorney Peter Taylor and his legal team. The unexpected announcement prompted an immediate adjournment of the case until March 13, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC).
Smith, who had been hearing rumors regarding his representation of Nah, sought clarification in open court before swiftly exiting the courtroom through the back door. When approached, he offered little comment, stating only that “nothing is happening today” and that an adjournment date had not been set—unaware that minutes later, the court had indeed scheduled the next hearing.
Peter Taylor, a Trinidadian attorney newly admitted to practice law in Belize, is also representing William “Danny” Mason in his high-profile kidnapping case, set for trial in late April. Taylor, who had returned to Trinidad, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding his new role in Nah’s defense.
At the next hearing, both Nah and his attorney are expected to appear virtually before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. The case remains one of the most closely watched in Belize, with many awaiting further developments in Nah’s legal strategy following today’s surprise move.
