Edwin Velázquez Collazo (Puerto Rico Art News) recently reported that the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico [Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC)] announced the appointment of Abdiel Segarra Ríos as the institution’s new associate curator.
Thus, Segarra Ríos joins the MAC curatorial team, made up of Marina Reyes Franco, curator, and Marianne Ramírez Aponte, executive director and chief curator of the museum.
Segarra Ríos, a native of Santurce, has extensive academic and professional training: a BA in Fine Arts from the School of Plastic Arts and Design of Puerto Rico (2008), an MA in Cultural Management and Administration from the University of Puerto Rico (2013), and a master’s degree in History of Contemporary Art and Visual Culture from the Autonomous University of Madrid (2018). He has led important projects such as director of “Área: lugar de proyectos,” part of the Fine Arts Program of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and of the San Juan Poli/Graphic Triennial. Likewise, he has curated exhibitions in Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States, the most recent being “Unspoken Identities” at the Ana Mas Project in Barcelona and “Cartographies of Displacement,” with Helen Ceballos, during Miami Art Week 2023 at Ten North Art.
Segarra Ríos has taught university courses at the School of Plastic Arts and has published articles in newspapers, academic journals, and independent platforms. Currently, he actively collaborates with several cultural organizations in Madrid and San Juan, such as Espacio Afro, La Parcería, and El Lobi, and he is also completing doctoral studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
