This year’s World Press Freedom Day theme is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis”.

World Press Freedom Day focuses on the vital role of journalism and freedom of expression in addressing the global environmental crisis.

Journalists play a crucial role in raising awareness of environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

However, they face challenges such as misinformation campaigns and attacks on their credibility.

The United Nations note that to address these challenges and promote sustainable development, a comprehensive strategy is needed.

This includes protecting journalists from harm, ensuring freedom of expression and access to information, promoting diverse media, regulating digital platforms, and enhancing media literacy among the public.

World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the importance of press freedom and a platform to assess its state globally, defend media independence, and honor journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
