By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-nine-year-old Leroy Anthony Richards, a car washer from Fabers Road, is behind bars after being charged with wounding a Good Samaritan who had offered him temporary lodging. The incident reportedly occurred after the homeowner told Richards he could no longer stay at the residence for free.

According to police, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Richards intentionally punched the home-owner, a resident of the Bingo King Area on Faber’s Road, injuring him in the process. Richards appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 last week, where he initially pleaded guilty to the charge but then tried to justify his actions, prompting the court to reject the plea and enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

In court, Richards claimed the altercation happened after Garbutt returned home intoxicated and became aggressive, allegedly making disturbing statements. Richards alleges that the owner claimed to chop someone up and put them in a bucket. Richards claims the owner then got up and started to approach him but he panicked and was triggered due to past bad experiences with drunken people and punched him but only “to wake him up,” adding that he “never meant to hit him so hard.”

Despite his explanation, Richards’ situation worsened when it was revealed that he still owed a $10,000 fine from a previous drug conviction. The Senior Magistrate set bail at $1,200 plus one surety but ordered that he pay $4,000 toward the outstanding fine before being released. Unable to do so, Richards was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until payment and bail are met.

Richards is scheduled to return to court on December 19, 2025.
