Every team has that one player whose story feels like home. For us, that’s Fatima Ramirez—the quiet storm from Belmopan who’s been inspiring us since she first stepped onto the court.
Fatima’s volleyball journey began under Yvette Price with Mystics, and later with Stars and Saint Catherine’s Academy. From the start, she was different—a prodigy with a calm presence, dazzling older players with her high-point attacks and the most graceful hands you’d ever see (we still dream of her trying out the setter role one day!). Raised in a peaceful, yoga-loving home by her mother Freda Ramirez, Fatima carried that same serenity into every match.
At just 15 years old, she made her mark on the national stage, helping Belize secure a dramatic win over Guatemala in 2018. That match didn’t just kick off the podium era for Belizean women’s volleyball—it introduced us to a generational talent.
Her path wasn’t always easy. Navigating the college scouting process was a challenge, but fate stepped in with a surprise scholarship to Eastern Wyoming College (yes, Wyoming!). She and Gareth Bruce took the leap, embracing the unknown like true warriors. When her coach moved on, Fatima followed the sun—literally—accepting a full ride to Edward Waters University in Florida, where she thrived both on and off the court.
Her star continued to rise, and in her senior year, she made the jump to Alabama A&M University (shoutout Coach Reeves once again), competing at the NCAA D1 level. Through it all, Fatima remained the same—humble, focused, and always putting the team first.
This U23 tournament was her final run at this level, and she gave us everything: attacking, receiving, serving, and most importantly, leading. She never demanded the spotlight, never overshadowed her younger teammates. She simply played with heart and left it all on the floor.
And then came the moment we’ll never forget—Fatima embracing her mother Freda after winning gold, looking back at us with that bright, reassuring smile and saying, “I finally got my Gold.” After years of near misses and heartbreak, it was a moment of pure joy. A full circle. A dream fulfilled.
Fatima’s journey reminds us that greatness isn’t just about talent—it’s about character. She’s shown us that the name on the front of the jersey means more than any stat sheet. And with leaders like her, Belizean volleyball is in beautiful hands.
Here’s to you, Fats. You’ve made Belmopan proud. You’ve made Belize proud. And we can’t wait to see what’s next.
