Sybil (dayFREURO) reports that January 1, 2024, saw the inauguration in Cotonou, Benin of a bust of Jean Jacques Dessalines, one of the heroes of Haitian independence. The bust was created by Haitian sculptor Borgella Dumond.

A significant moment is planned for January 1, 2024, with the installation, in Cotonou, of a bust of Jean Jacques Dessalines, hero of Haitian independence and father of the Nation. Borgella Dumond, the sculptor behind this creation, exclusively shared his motivation as the performer of this work, among others.

The objective of this action, according to Borgella, is to forge closer ties between Haiti and Benin on historical, cultural and spiritual levels, on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of Haiti’s independence expected on January 1, 2024. The work will be installed in the heart of Ogoun Dessalines (Savalou), a vodou space located in Abomey Calavi, in the north of Cotonou.

“As part of the Haiti-Benin project, my work becomes a powerful vector for establishing a cultural connection between the two nations. By representing iconic figures and celebrating shared cultural heritage,” explains Borgella Dumond, professional sculptor and former student in visual arts at the National School of Arts (ENARTS) in Haiti.

The idea of creating this bust in honor of Dessalines, he tells us, emerged from a group of Haitians residing in Benin, patriots who had long nourished the dream of seeing a sculpture of Jean Jacques Dessalines made by a compatriot, settled somewhere in this city with a common past with Haiti. “After discovering my skills through my online portfolio and my videos, they called on me to bring this project to fruition,” says Dumond. The Association of Haitians Living in Benin (AHVAB) played a central role in the realization of this project, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in the creation of meaningful works. “The sculpture that I created represents much more than a simple artistic work. It is a tribute to the resilience, the struggle, and the determination embodied by the emperor Jean Jacques Dessalines,” underlines Dumond.

Borgella Dumond is the author of several sculptural works, including busts of Jacques Stephen Alexis, Patrice Lumumba and Kemi Seba. [. . .]
