By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 42-year-old Honduran woman has been fined and ordered to leave Belize after overstaying her visitor’s permit for nearly a year.
Maria Del Carmen Colindres Moreno appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon, where she pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the conditions of her visitor’s permit.
Moreno was fined $1,000, which the court ordered her to pay immediately or serve three months in prison if she defaults. In addition, a removal order was granted to the Immigration Department, mandating that she be returned to Honduras.
According to immigration officials, Moreno legally entered Belize on August 16, 2024, and was permitted to remain until September 15, 2024. However, she failed to apply for an extension and continued to live in the country without authorization.
In court, Moreno told the magistrate she did not wish to return home and was willing to pay the fine to remain in Belize. Despite her plea, the magistrate explained that the Immigration Act requires expulsion once a removal order is made.
Unable to pay the fine before the end of the day, Moreno was taken into custody and escorted to the Belize Central Prison, where she will remain until the fine is settled or the default sentence is served.
