By Zoila Palma: A Guatemalan congressman and three police officers were killed in an armed attack on Friday in the eastern department of Zacapa, according to authorities.
The attack targeted Congressman Julio Cesar Portillo Paz while he was in the town of Rio Hondo, an area known for drug trafficking activity.
Portillo sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. His death was confirmed by the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, which expressed condolences to his family and colleagues. Guatemala’s Congress also issued a statement mourning his passing.
President Bernardo Arevalo confirmed the deaths of the three National Civil Police officers, describing them as having died in the line of duty.
He instructed security forces to cooperate with prosecutors investigating the killings. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or identified those responsible for the attack.
Zacapa is known for organised criminal activity, with the Lorenzana family cartel, which has links to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, controlling much of the local drug trade.
