By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 42-year-old Belize City man has been remanded to prison after allegedly holding a security guard at gunpoint while stealing more than $400 worth of beer and soft drinks from Boardwalk Plaza on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Lusbyn Lionel Martinez, a recycler of Tigris Street, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 6, charged with robbery in connection with the Halloween morning incident.

Police allege that around 5:50 a.m. on October 31, 64-year-old watchman Luis Lopez was conducting his routine patrol at Boardwalk Plaza, located at Mile 4, when he encountered two men loading cases of beer and soft drinks into a black van.

When Lopez approached them, one of the men allegedly produced an object resembling a firearm and ordered him to remain quiet. Fearing for his life, Lopez complied, allowing the suspects to escape in the van toward Ladyville.

The stolen items included five cases of assorted beers and two cases of soft drinks, valued at $420 and belonging to Ramon Salgado.

Investigators subsequently obtained surveillance footage showing two men loading the beverages into a black Chrysler Town and Country van. Police say one of the suspects was identified as Martinez, while the identity of the second individual remains unknown.

Martinez was detained on November 4 and subsequently charged with robbery.

During Friday’s arraignment, Martinez appeared with attorney Ronell Gonzalez, who requested a sentencing indication from the magistrate, explaining that his client was hoping for a fine if he chose to plead guilty.

However, the magistrate declined to provide an immediate indication, citing the seriousness of the charge and the allegation that a firearm was involved.

Martinez subsequently pleaded not guilty.

Due to the nature of the charge, bail was not granted, and Martinez was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 22, 2026, when his case will return to court.
