By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): As the tourism season gets underway, residents of North Ambergris Caye say their island is not ready to welcome visitors, and they want government to step in.
The Ambergris North Alliance (ANA), a community nonprofit formed in 2024, says the main road north of San Pedro is lined with trash and illegal dump sites, many in full view of tourists heading to Secret Beach.
In photos shared with officials, the group points to construction debris dumped near Mile 2.5, a large scale dumpsite around Mile 3, and sargassum dumped into the lagoon, where it is rotting and eroding the main road. All of these sites, the group says, sit within a single mile stretch between town and the Secret Beach turnoff.
On September 28, ANA wrote to eight officials, including Mayor Wally Nunez, Area Representative and Minister Andre Perez, Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler, Sustainable Development Minister Orlando Habet and Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai. The group asked for a response by October 12.
According to ANA, none of the eight replied.
“We’re not asking government to do our work. We’re asking it to do its own. Volunteers can’t keep up with this alone,” the alliance said.
On October 23, ANA delivered another copy of its letter to the Mayor’s office and reached out to Ramon Cervantes, the new Minister of Public Utilities, Logistics and Solid Waste Management, to request a meeting.
