By Zoila Palma: The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning that loneliness has become a major global public health concern, affecting one in six people worldwide and contributing to an estimated 871,000 deaths annually.
In a report released by its Commission on Social Connection, WHO highlights the serious consequences of loneliness and social isolation, urging governments and communities to make social connection a public health priority. The report estimates that loneliness is linked to approximately 100 deaths every hour.
WHO warns that loneliness and social isolation can increase the risk of serious health conditions, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline and premature death. Loneliness also has significant mental health consequences, with lonely people twice as likely to experience depression.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned that the effects extend beyond individuals and families, costing societies billions through healthcare expenses, education challenges and lost employment opportunities.
Young people are among those particularly affected, with between 17 and 21 percent of individuals aged 13 to 29 reporting feelings of loneliness, and teenagers experiencing the highest rates. The report also found that approximately 24 percent of people in low-income countries reported feeling lonely, compared with about 11 percent in high-income countries.
Older adults and adolescents are also vulnerable to social isolation, while people with disabilities, migrants and other marginalized groups may face additional barriers to meaningful social connections. WHO notes that poor health, low income, living alone and negative online interactions can contribute to the problem.
To address the growing concern, WHO is calling for stronger policies, community initiatives and public awareness campaigns that encourage meaningful human connections.
