By Zoila Palma:  Belize joined international representatives at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), held from October 19 to 30, 2026, in Yerevan, Armenia, to participate in global discussions on protecting biodiversity and strengthening conservation efforts.

Belize’s participation provided an opportunity to promote its natural heritage, build international partnerships and exchange knowledge on strategies to address biodiversity loss.

Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Orlando Habet, led Belize’s delegation during the High-Level Segment on October 27 and 28, accompanied by the technical team from the Belize National Biodiversity Office (NBIO). Belize’s participation comes as countries work to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and strengthen national commitments to protecting nature.

The Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative (CSFI) also participated in COP17, with team members engaging in discussions at the Meridian Exhibition Center’s Blue and Green Zones. In the Blue Zone, discussions focused on implementing global biodiversity targets, including addressing human-wildlife conflict, improving ecological connectivity and exploring the use of technology and artificial intelligence in conservation. In the Green Zone, the team explored innovative initiatives presented by academic institutions and local businesses while exchanging experiences with organizations pursuing similar conservation goals.

Belize’s participation comes as more countries submit updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), which outline national commitments to addressing nature loss.

These international engagements offer Belize opportunities to strengthen its biodiversity protection efforts and safeguard its natural resources for future generations.
