International News: High cost of living drive teachers away in Italy

By Zoila Palma:  Teachers in Milan, Italy, are increasingly leaving the city or avoiding available positions as rising housing costs and stagnant salaries make it difficult to afford basic living expenses.

The growing problem is affecting schools’ ability to recruit and retain educators, particularly as teachers earn the same nationally negotiated salaries regardless of where they work, Reuters report.

Massimiliano Matteri, a 49-year-old Italian literature and history teacher, left Milan after three years in a small studio apartment and transferred to Livorno on the Tuscan coast, where he was able to purchase a more comfortable home and better manage his finances.

Data compiled by the CISL trade union showed that approximately 4,300 teaching positions were available across the Milan metropolitan area at the start of the summer, the highest number in Italy.

About one-fifth of those vacancies reportedly remained unfilled.

The situation reflects Italy’s wider cost-of-living and wage challenges.
