By Zoila Palma: BEL’s Executive chairman Lynn Young explained to 7news Belize that the company owes about $20 million to Mexico’s CFE.
“Well, so we monthly have to look at different suppliers. But we have diesel also that we have to pay. I can tell you that diesel alone in September was running about 80% of our collections had to go just to pay for diesel. So, during the month of September, we turned to the government to assist in paying CFE. Currently, some of the overdue to CFE is because we can’t get U.S. dollars to pay them. So we have some Belize dollars-we have enough Belize dollars to meet the June and July bill. Those are still outstanding,” Young explained.
Young says that for the month of August, BEL obtained assistance from the government to pay those bills.
“But we haven’t been able to get U.S. dollars because, like I said, the cost of fuel is affecting everybody, and I think it’s putting a strain on the U.S. dollar,” he added.
