Why are police patrolling with flashing lights but no sirens?

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Police Department has clarified that patrol vehicles operating with flashing lights in Belize City are not necessarily responding to emergencies, but may be using the lights to increase police visibility and make their presence known.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith addressed the practice during Wednesday’s police briefing after questions were raised about police vehicles travelling through the city at night with their emergency lights activated.

Smith explained that the objective is to make the presence of law enforcement more noticeable in communities as part of the department’s policing activities.

She noted that motorists should pay attention to the behaviour of police vehicles to determine whether an emergency response is underway.

According to Smith, when a police vehicle is travelling at a normal speed with flashing lights but without a siren or horn, motorists may continue conducting their lawful business.

However, when flashing lights are accompanied by a siren and horn, drivers should recognize that officers are responding to an emergency and take appropriate action to give way.

The clarification comes as police continue employing various measures to increase their visibility and strengthen crime prevention efforts across Belize City.
