By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-two-year-old Gian Teck has been sentenced to three years, seven months and two days in prison for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl after a High Court judge found that he showed little genuine remorse and presented a risk of reoffending.
Justice Nigel Pilgrim handed down the sentence on Wednesday, October 28, following Teck’s guilty plea earlier this month. The judge cited significant aggravating factors, including troubling statements Teck made during a Social Inquiry Report assessment in which he reportedly indicated that he saw no difference between having sexual intercourse with a minor and an adult.
The court also rejected Teck’s claim of genuine remorse, noting that although he had asked for forgiveness, his defense had challenged the victim’s credibility during the trial. Justice Pilgrim stressed that children must be protected, even from themselves, warning that adults who engage in sexual intercourse with minors should expect imprisonment.
“Adults are not to have sex with minors under the age of 16, period,” the judge declared.
Justice Pilgrim initially arrived at a five-year sentence after considering the circumstances of the offense and the aggravating factors. He subsequently reduced the sentence to four years after considering Teck’s previously clean record and positive character references. However, because Teck only pleaded guilty after the victim had testified, the judge granted a 10 percent reduction rather than the usual one-third discount for an early guilty plea.
After crediting Teck for seven days previously spent on remand, the final sentence was calculated at three years, seven months and two days, effective October 1, 2026.
As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Teck was 18 when he had sexual intercourse with the minor at his Belize City residence on June 5, 2023. He subsequently admitted to police that the encounter occurred but claimed he believed the girl was 15.
Teck also previously faced separate allegations involving another 14-year-old girl. That case was discontinued in January 2026 after the complainant declined to testify. Justice Candace Nanton cautioned at the time that the prosecution’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi did not amount to an acquittal and that the charges could be reinstated.
Teck was represented by attorney Javier Williams, while Crown Counsel Kirk Brown appeared for the prosecution.
