By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, in collaboration with the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA), conducted a field demonstration and training session for farmers from Indian Church and San Carlos in the Orange Walk District on October 23, 2026.

The training focused on using beneficial insects to control the diamondback moth, a pest that affects cabbage crops.

Facilitated by OIRSA Biological Control Project Coordinator Edwin Sosa and Ministry Extension Officer Jesse Madrid, the session continued training that began on September 1. The initiative aims to help farmers adopt integrated pest management techniques that reduce their dependence on chemical insecticides while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly pest control.

OIRSA and the Ministry of Agriculture will conduct follow-up visits every 10 days to monitor the demonstration plot until harvest.

The results will help determine the effectiveness of the approach and guide future implementation.
