By Zoila Palma: The United States will issue visas to Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and his family following his defeat in Brazil’s presidential election, a senior U.S. State Department official said.
The announcement comes as questions remain about Bolsonaro’s whereabouts after reports that he left Brazil following his loss to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, AP reports.
The official, who spoke anonymously due to visa privacy laws, confirmed that the State Department would allow Bolsonaro and his family to enter the United States but did not clarify whether they had already departed Brazil or were on their way.
Bolsonaro’s campaign manager, Rogério Marinho, said he had received a message from the defeated candidate indicating that he wanted to take a break before speaking with his team.
Bolsonaro’s reported departure comes after a Brazilian Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports by Tuesday.
He is under investigation in Brazil for alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion, all of which he denies. Before the deadline, Bolsonaro said he had no intention of leaving the country and vowed to challenge what he described as an attempt to intimidate him.
The development could further strain relations between Brazil and the United States, as Bolsonaro has maintained ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Brazil’s election was “rigged.”
