By Zoila Palma: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is strengthening efforts to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean prepare for emergencies and disasters that threaten cultural heritage, as extreme weather events and concerns surrounding the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon highlight the need for improved risk management.
The initiative comes amid reports of intense rainfall, flooding and landslides across the region.
UNESCO warns that disasters can damage museums, libraries, archives, heritage sites and collections, threatening cultural expressions and historical resources that preserve communities’ identities and collective memory.
As part of its global “Culture × El Niño 2026–2027 campaign”, UNESCO is offering cultural institutions free access to the El Niño Readiness Check in Spanish. The self-assessment tool features ten preparedness measures designed to help institutions identify gaps, establish priorities and strengthen preventive action based on the hazards they face.
Through these efforts, UNESCO aims to strengthen prevention, preparedness, response and recovery measures to protect cultural heritage against increasingly challenging climate-related hazards.
