By Zoila Palma: Today, United States and Cuban officials engaged in a heated exchange at the United Nations General Assembly as tensions escalated over Washington’s longstanding economic embargo against Cuba.
The confrontation occurred after US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz urged member states to oppose an annual resolution condemning the embargo, AP reports.
As Waltz criticized Cuba’s socialist government over alleged corruption, members of the Cuban delegation, including Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, shouted objections and struck their table. Rodríguez later approached the front of the assembly and called Waltz a liar, prompting the US ambassador to respond sharply.
The confrontation reflects worsening relations between the two countries as US President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies economic pressure on Cuba in an effort to force political changes.
Recent US measures targeting countries that supply oil to Cuba have contributed to fuel shortages and widespread power outages, affecting essential services such as water, communications and cooking.
