By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police in Punta Gorda are investigating an incident involving a 16-year-old student who allegedly pulled out an imitation firearm during a confrontation with a teacher over homework at Julian Cho Highschool in Punta Gorda.
According to ASP Stacy Smith, the incident occurred on October 20, 2026, when a teacher questioned the student about an assignment he had failed to submit.
When the student could not produce his homework, the teacher reportedly requested his demerit card.
Police say the student then allegedly reached into his pencil case, removed what appeared to be a firearm and subsequently placed it back inside the case.
With encouragement from his classmates, the student eventually surrendered the object, which was determined to be an imitation firearm.
Smith confirmed that the teacher has not made a formal police report. However, the Community Policing Unit in Punta Gorda has become involved in addressing the incident.
She explained that possession of an imitation firearm with criminal intent can constitute a criminal offence and that the student, being 16 years old, is of an age at which criminal liability may apply.
Police have not announced any charges, and the matter remains under investigation.
