By Zoila Palma: The Belize Police Department has congratulated Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Elroy E. Awardo on receiving a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) in International Conflict and Cooperation at the University of Stirling in Scotland.
Awardo currently serves as a Policy, Research and Innovation Analyst in the department’s Standards and Accountability Branch. He also holds a Master’s degree in Defence Analysis and a Postgraduate Diploma in Disaster Risk Management.
Awardo’s research will examine the transition from historical tensions to security cooperation between Belize and Guatemala, particularly following an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on the countries’ border dispute.
His work aims to develop strategies for confidence-building and joint threat management, with a focus on narcotrafficking, cross-border crime and climate change-induced migration.
A key objective of the research is to develop a framework for cooperation among Belize’s national security institutions, including the Belize Police Department, Belize Defence Force, Belize Coast Guard and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Belize Police Department said the academic achievement represents a valuable investment in national and regional security and expressed confidence that Awardo’s studies will contribute to strengthening security cooperation.
