By Zoila Palma: The “Keeping Independence Alive: Belize @45” Research Conference concluded on October 1, 2026, at the University of Belize Conference Centre in Belmopan, bringing together researchers, scholars and participants for two days of discussions on Belize’s development as an independent nation.
The conference’s second day featured 11 academic presentations exploring themes including Belize’s relations with the United States, culture and identity, national security, and community and development.
The discussions encouraged participants to reflect on Belize’s history while examining issues shaping the country’s present and future.
Day Two also saw the launch of “Enduring Diplomacy: Belize 1971–2026,” authored by Assad Shoman and Alexis Rosado and published by the Belize Policy Research Institute (BELPRI). The book is available for purchase at the BELPRI office in Belize City and the University of Belize in Belmopan.
The Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR-NICH) expressed appreciation to the presenters, researchers, scholars and participants who contributed to the conference.
