By Zoila Palma: The Belize Fisheries Department has announced that the Queen Conch fishing season officially opens today, October 1, 2026, and will run through June 30, 2027, in accordance with the Fisheries Resources Act, Chapter 210 of the Laws of Belize.
The Department reminded the public that the season may close before June 30 if the national Queen Conch production quota is reached. During the closed season, from July 1 to September 30, it is illegal to take, buy, sell or possess Queen Conch in Belize.
Fisheries regulations also prohibit the harvesting or possession of conch that falls below the legal size and weight requirements.
Queen Conch must have an overall shell length of more than 7 inches (17.8 centimetres), while minimum weight requirements apply to unprocessed, market-clean and fully processed conch meat.
The Department further reminded the public that filleted or diced conch meat, other than market-clean product, cannot be bought, sold or possessed without a special permit from the Fisheries Administrator.
Exporters are also prohibited from exporting Queen Conch beyond the quota granted under the Fisheries Resources Act.
