Opposition Leader sounds alarm over Tropic Air’s PG closure

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Opposition is calling on the Government to step in before Tropic Air’s Punta Gorda station closes on November 1.

Opposition Leader Tracy Panton is urging the Ministers responsible for Civil Aviation and Tourism to engage urgently with Tropic Air, other domestic operators, local businesses and community leaders. The goal, she says, is to find practical options to keep air service to Punta Gorda.

Panton also wants the Government to present a clear plan to safeguard essential air links, support affected workers and sustain investor confidence.

She said aviation modernisation must reflect the needs of affected communities and operators.

Her statement adds to growing concern in the south. Former Punta Gorda Mayor Ashton McKenzie has warned the closure will ripple through Toledo’s tourism industry, hurting eco lodges whose guests arrive by plane and businesses that rely on air shipping.

McKenzie has proposed reducing flights instead of ending service, subsidizing flights, boosting promotion of Toledo, or engaging Maya Island Air.

With a month to go, pressure is mounting for a solution.
