By Zoila Palma: Households in Belize paid more for electricity and water in August 2026, as the cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased by 4.4 percent compared to August 2025.
The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported that higher electricity costs, increased rental prices and rising water bills contributed to the increase.
SIB noted that electricity costs were affected by the higher price per kilowatt-hour introduced at the beginning of 2026, together with the implementation of the Cost of Power Adjustment during August. For a household consuming 225 kilowatt-hours per month, the electricity bill increased from $84.25 in August 2025 to $94.90 in August 2026.
Water costs also increased over the year. A household consuming 4,500 gallons of water per month saw its bill rise from $86.38 in August 2025 to $91.13 in August 2026.
The SIB also reported an increase in home rental costs during the period.
The higher costs for electricity, water and rent formed part of the national inflation rate of 4.4 percent recorded in August 2026.
