By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): International paint and coatings company Comex has apologized to Belizeans after the country was left off a map of Central America used in one of the company’s recent promotional posts.
Comex Centroamérica acknowledged the mistake publicly, saying it understood why the omission caused frustration among Belizeans.
“At Comex, we acknowledge our mistake,” the company stated.
Comex said Belize had been left out of its map in a recent post and apologized to everyone who brought the omission to its attention.
“Belize is part of our region, and to us, every part matters,” the company added.
The apology is particularly notable because Comex has a longstanding commercial presence in Belize.
Comex is part of PPG Industries, which completed its US$2.3 billion acquisition of the Mexico based coatings company in 2014. At the time, PPG described Comex as a major architectural coatings business operating across Mexico and Central America.
In 2015, PPG expanded its Central American retail operations through the acquisition of Consorcio Latinoamericano.
PPG specifically listed Belize among seven Central American countries where it would operate company owned stores.
Comex products and trademarks have also had an established presence in Belize. Records from Belize’s Intellectual Property Office show multiple Comex trademarks registered for use in the country.
The original promotional graphic highlighted Comex products being used in more than 70 countries, but Belize was noticeably absent from the Central American map.
Following the reaction, Comex acknowledged the error and made clear that Belize is part of the region it serves.
