By Zoila Palma: More than a dozen United Nations human rights experts are calling on the United States to halt its policy of deporting migrants to countries other than their own, warning that the practice could expose vulnerable people to torture, persecution and other human rights abuses.
The experts said at least 23,000 third-country nationals have been deported to 29 countries and territories under agreements reached by the Trump administration since last year.
Rights groups have raised concerns about conditions in some receiving countries, including Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic, Reuters report.
In a communication to the US government and 35 countries and territories involved in the arrangements, the experts warned that the risks were particularly serious for children, women, people with disabilities, trafficking victims, LGBT people, human rights defenders and stateless individuals. They said the reported harms were no longer hypothetical and warned of what they described as a “cascade of human rights violations.”
The Trump administration has defended the agreements as lawful and said deportations comply with US immigration law.
