By Zoila Palma:  The United States plans to reopen its largest livestock inspection port along the US-Mexico border today allowing Mexican cattle imports to resume as officials ease restrictions imposed over concerns about New World screwworm.

The US Department of Agriculture said trade will resume at Santa Teresa, New Mexico, following a review of the situation.

While screwworm cases in Mexico have continued to rise, US officials say infestations have remained relatively contained, with two active cases currently reported in the United States.

The reopening is not expected to immediately reduce record-high US beef prices, Reuters report.

Experts say it could take five to eight months for imported Mexican cattle to reach slaughter weight, while US cattle supplies remain tight following years of drought and declining herd sizes.
