By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 31-year-old Belize City fisherman has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.
Robert Michael Spain, a diver and commercial fisherman of Fabers Road, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1, where he was charged in connection with an alleged firearm attack on another man.
Police say the complainant reported that on September 6, 2026, he was at home when Spain, who was allegedly accompanied by another man known to him, produced a firearm, cranked it and pulled the trigger.
According to the complainant, the weapon snapped twice without firing. Fearing for his life, he ran from the area while the alleged attacker escaped.
The man later reported the incident to police. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage but reportedly obtained no useful information from the video.
Spain was subsequently detained and questioned by police. During an interview, he reportedly denied the allegation.
At his arraignment, Spain pleaded not guilty to the charge. Due to the nature of the firearm-related offence, bail was denied and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Spain is due back in court on November 25, 2026, when disclosure is expected to be provided.
