By Breaking Belize News Staff: El Salvador’s dramatic transformation in public security is again generating discussion across the region, raising a question for Belizeans: Should Belize adopt any of the crime fighting policies used under President Nayib Bukele?

Claims circulating online describe a 98 percent reduction in homicides in El Salvador. Official Salvadoran figures show a similarly dramatic long term decline. The country’s homicide rate fell from 106 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015 to 1.3 per 100,000 in 2025. Officials recorded 82 homicides in 2025.

Bukele’s government credits its Territorial Control Plan and the state of emergency introduced in 2022 with breaking the power of violent gangs. More than 90,000 people have been detained since the emergency measures began.

The results have attracted attention in Belize, where violent crime remains a persistent concern. Belize Police Commissioner Dr. Richard Rosado reported 91 murders in 2025, compared with 92 in 2024.

However, El Salvador’s approach has also generated serious controversy.

Human Rights Watch says gang violence has declined markedly, but has documented allegations of arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances and serious violations of due process during the state of emergency. Salvadoran authorities have defended their security strategy as necessary to dismantle gangs that once controlled communities.

That leaves an important debate for Belize. Could elements such as stronger intelligence gathering, tougher action against organized gangs, improved investigations and greater police presence be adapted locally while maintaining constitutional protections and due process?

What do you think? Should Belize adopt some of El Salvador’s tough crime fighting policies, or should Belize pursue a different approach to violent crime?
