By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is keeping his cards close to his chest on whether Orange Walk South Area Representative José Abelardo Mai will return to Cabinet.
Asked about Mai’s future following his extended absence from Cabinet, Briceño declined to commit to a decision, saying ministerial appointments are the prerogative of the Prime Minister.
“When that time comes, I will let you know,” Briceño said.
Mai stepped away from Cabinet in November 2025 to reportedly address serious health problems and subsequently underwent surgery. Rodwell Ferguson was assigned the Agriculture portfolio following Mai’s departure.
Mai returned to the House of Representatives in August and has said publicly that he misses his ministerial responsibilities but wants to recover more fully before contemplating a return. He also acknowledged at the time that any reappointment rests entirely with Briceño.
For now, the Prime Minister is giving no indication whether Mai will eventually return to his former portfolio or whether Ferguson will remain Agriculture Minister.
