By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have detained Gregorio Espirito as they investigate allegations that he deliberately set fire to his own house, the home he shared with his wife.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Head of the National Crime Investigation Branch, said police responded on Saturday to a fire at a residence in Paraiso Village, where an approximately 18-by-20-foot building was engulfed in flames.
According to Romero, Espirito’s wife reported that she was in the area when she saw her husband enter the house. Shortly afterward, the building went up in flames.
Gregorio Espirito was subsequently detained and remains in police custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
Romero confirmed that the couple lived together and that police have received previous reports of domestic violence involving them.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be laid.
