International News: Cuba says no talks underway with U.S. as economic crisis deepens

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said that there are currently no negotiations or plans for future talks with the United States, as Havana continues to condemn Washington’s long-standing economic restrictions against the island.

Rodríguez described the U.S. measures as a “genocidal” blockade and said Cuba remains willing to maintain contact with Washington despite the lack of progress.

At a press conference in Havana, Rodríguez said the economic damage caused by the decades-old U.S. trade embargo increased by seven percent in 2025 compared with the previous year, reaching an estimated US$8.1 billion. He warned that the economic impact could become even more severe in 2026 following measures imposed by the Trump administration targeting Cuba’s access to oil.

Rodríguez blamed the restrictions for worsening shortages of electricity and other essential resources across the island. He said the crisis has resulted in prolonged blackouts, food spoilage and difficult living conditions for families, with some Cubans reportedly going days with only a few hours of electricity. “The blockade doesn’t punish the government, it punishes every person on the island in every way,” Rodríguez said.

The United States has defended its sanctions and restrictions, arguing that they are intended to pressure Cuba’s communist government to address concerns over economic and human rights conditions.

The United Nations has also raised concerns over the impact of the sanctions and energy restrictions, with U.N. experts warning of an increasing risk of disease outbreaks as conditions deteriorate.
