By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have formally arrested and charged two men in connection with the weekend murders of Rasheed Hyde and Gil Pineda in Santa Elena Town.
Police confirmed on Wednesday that 25-year-old Chris Anthony Veliz, a Belizean bartender of Santa Elena, and 25-year-old Roberto Vidal May, a Belizean labourer, have both been charged with murder.
The charges stem from a broad-daylight shooting at around 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, on George Price Avenue in Santa Elena. Police previously said 35-year-old Hyde, of Georgeville, and 36-year-old Pineda, of Dangriga, were in front of a residence when gunmen travelling in a Nissan Rogue opened fire on them.
Both men were rushed for medical treatment. Hyde succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting, while Pineda, a mechanic also known as “Flaco,” died the following day while undergoing treatment.
In the immediate aftermath of the double murder, police detained two men and impounded a vehicle of interest. Police had also indicated that investigators were pursuing two possible motives in the case as operations were stepped up in the area.
Veliz and May now face prosecution for the deaths of both men.
