By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old Ladyville mechanic has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being accused of pointing a firearm at his former partner and later being found in connection with an unlicensed pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

Anderson Martinez, of the Vista Del Mar area, appeared before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday, charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, keeping a firearm without a gun licence and keeping ammunition without a gun licence.

The charges stem from an incident on Sunday, August 23, when Martinez’s former partner reported to police that he had allegedly threatened to kill her. She alleged that later that evening Martinez confronted her while holding a black pistol, pointed it at her and threatened her, prompting her to run inside her home and call 911.

Police subsequently searched the area associated with Martinez and reportedly discovered a black Remington pistol loaded with 14 live 9mm rounds. ASP Stacy Smith publicly confirmed that Martinez was formally arrested and charged following the firearm discovery.

Martinez pleaded not guilty to all three charges, telling the court that he knew nothing about the firearm and disputing the allegation that he pointed a gun at the woman. He also claimed surveillance footage could support his version of events.

The woman, meanwhile, told 7News Belize that Martinez had been her common-law partner for approximately seven years and alleged that she had endured previous threats. She said she has since obtained a protection order but remains fearful for herself and her family.

Martinez was remanded to prison and is due back in court on September 1.
