By Zoila Palma:  Transportation costs surged by 12.4 percent in July 2026 compared with the same month last year, making the category one of the largest contributors to Belize’s 4.1 percent national inflation rate, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The increase was driven largely by higher prices for all major types of motor vehicle fuel.

Diesel recorded the biggest increase, with the average price per gallon climbing by $2.98, from $11.34 in July 2025 to $14.32 in July 2026.

Premium gasoline increased by $2.33 per gallon, rising from $13.22 to $15.54, while regular gasoline went up by $1.91, from $11.89 to $13.77 per gallon.

Higher fuel prices were accompanied by increased transportation service costs.

Passenger transport services were 15.5 percent more expensive than they were a year earlier, reflecting higher bus and taxi fares as well as increased international airfares.

With fuel prices significantly higher than a year ago, motorists are paying more at the pump while higher transportation expenses are also contributing to increased costs for travel and other goods and services.
