By Breaking Belize News Staff: Mother of five Nichole Gilda McDonald is out of the Belize Central Prison after a Magistrate granted her bail on Monday in connection with the alleged assault of a doctor at the Matron Roberts Polyclinic.
McDonald, 38, had been on remand since June 8, when bail was denied after she was charged with harm upon a doctorand aggravated assault upon a nurse stemming from an incident at the clinic two days earlier. At the time, the court found that the new charges allegedly breached conditions attached to bail she had received just days before in another case.
On Monday, McDonald was granted bail in the sum of $800 plus one surety of the same amount. As conditions of her release, she must report to a police station once weekly and must not be arrested and charged with another offence while on bail.
McDonald was also provided with 10 pages of disclosure in the harm case involving the doctor. Trial has been set for October 21, 2026.
The June 6 confrontation at Matron Roberts drew significant public attention after videos circulated on social media. The doctor later spoke publicly about the incident and called for stronger legal protection for healthcare workers.
McDonald has pleaded not guilty and maintains that she will contest the allegations at trial.
She told reporters following her release that her time in prison included a period under sanction and that she participated in the Ashcroft Rehabilitation Programme and an anger-management programme. While maintaining her innocence, McDonald said she was grateful for what she learned from the programme and was looking forward to returning home to her children.
McDonald also has other pending criminal matters. She faces six charges arising from separate alleged incidents in early June, including aggravated assault, common assault, damage to property, insulting words and wounding.
Separately, McDonald is accused of using a computer system to disseminate a false statement concerning former Commissioner of Police Chester Williams. That charge was previously dismissed but was reinstated in May 2026. In July, the Magistrate’s Court was informed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that the cybercrime matter proceed on indictment to the High Court rather than be tried summarily in the lower court.
McDonald remains unrepresented in the criminal matters and maintains her innocence.
