Government considering wider GST relief on electricity bills

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Briceño administration says Cabinet could consider broader relief from General Sales Tax on electricity bills as Belizeans struggle with rising power costs.

Public Utilities Minister Michel Chebat confirmed during Monday’s press conference that the newly introduced Cost of Power Adjustment will not attract GST.

He was also asked whether Government should go further and reduce or remove GST from electricity more generally.

Chebat said that would require Cabinet consideration, noting that any reduction in tax revenue would have to be weighed against Government spending obligations elsewhere. He nevertheless described the proposal as a legitimate matter for consideration.

The PUC-approved COPA for August is 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour and is listed separately on customers’ electricity bills without GST.
