By Zoila Palma: Thousands of Belizean students are benefiting from the Government of Belize’s free education initiative, providing significant financial relief to families while helping more young people access secondary education.
The program is a key initiative under Prime Minister John Briceño’s Plan Belize agenda and is aimed at reducing financial barriers to high school.
Schools including Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio and Mopan Technical High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen have welcomed students through the initiative, giving families an opportunity to keep their children in school without having to shoulder the full cost of tuition.
The program is intended to make educational opportunities more accessible to students regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
For many working-class households, the savings can be substantial. Families that previously had to find money for tuition are now saving more than BZ$1,000, allowing them to redirect those funds toward other supplies, food and household necessities.
The initiative is also expected to help increase access to secondary education by removing one of the major financial obstacles facing families.
As the program continues, thousands of Belizean students are gaining opportunities to remain in school, develop skills and prepare for future employment.
