No diesel relief, No buses: Operators set to park buses on Monday

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Bus Association (BBA) has formally notified Prime Minister John Briceño and Minister of Transport Louis Zabaneh that its member operators will discontinue bus services beginning Monday, August 24, 2026, unless the Government implements a solution to address the continued high cost of diesel.

In a letter today, the BBA said the decision was not taken lightly and comes after repeated efforts to have the matter addressed. The Association first wrote to the Ministry of Transport on July 15, 36 days ago, before the previous diesel subsidy expired on August 4. The matter was later escalated directly to the Prime Minister on August 5, but the BBA says no solution has been facilitated.

“This is not a decision that the BBA has taken lightly or abruptly,” the Association stated, noting that the industry has once again reached a critical financial point.

The BBA said operators have continued absorbing the rising cost of diesel, as well as increased expenses for parts, tires and other essential operating inputs.

The Association also pointed to the ongoing conflict in Iran and its impact on fuel prices, saying, “The Government’s earlier intervention provided the critical financial relief that enabled operators to continue operating.” It added that with the conflict continuing, the industry has returned to the same financial position that previously required government assistance.

Expressing frustration with the lack of action, the BBA said, “The BBA sincerely regrets that the matter has reached this breaking point for a second time.”

However, the Association said it remains willing to work with the Government and is calling for “an immediate reinstatement of the subsidy retroactively” to allow bus operators to resume services without interruption.
