By Breaking Belize News Staff: Electricity customers across Belize will pay more on their light bills this month as Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) applies a new Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) of 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, following a final ruling by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
The adjustment is the first under a new regulatory sandbox introduced by the PUC to monitor BEL’s actual cost of purchasing power. BEL reported that its actual power costs over the past six months were 4.3 cents per kilowatt-hour higher than the reference cost approved by the PUC.
However, customers will not be required to cover the full difference at once.
Under the new system, monthly COPA adjustments are capped at 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. For August, customers who are not enrolled under the Social Rate will therefore pay an additional 1.5 cents for every kilowatt-hour consumed. The charge will appear separately on electricity bills and is not subject to GST.
The PUC said the adjustment will be reassessed monthly based on verified information provided by BEL, meaning future COPA charges could increase, decrease, remain at zero or result in a rebate.
