By Zoila Palma: Belize made history on Saturday night as the country hosted the Miss Black International Ambassador pageant for the first time, welcoming contestants from several countries, including Ghana and Barbados.

Belize also celebrated major success at the event, with Maryam Abdul-Qawiyy crowned Ms. Black International Ambassador and D’Ancy Ramclam taking the title of Teen Black International Ambassador.

Former Miss Universe Belize titleholder Ashley Lightburn served as the National Director for Belize and said the team had only about seven weeks to select and prepare the delegates. “We had roughly, I think, seven weeks to select and train our delegates,” Lightburn explained.

Belize ultimately fielded representatives in three categories, with Maryam Abdul-Qawiyy, D’Ancy Ramclam and Felicia Alas selected to represent the country.

Lightburn said the results demonstrated the strength of Belize’s representatives, particularly Abdul-Qawiyy, who stood out across several areas of the competition.

“Maryam won, I think, there were like eight different categories of additional prizes that she could have won and she took at least six of those,” Lightburn said.

Abdul-Qawiyy captured awards including Best Costume, Best in Interview and Best in Evening Gown, in addition to winning the Ms. Black International Ambassador crown.

The National Director also commended both delegates for taking part despite the short preparation period and challenges associated with pageant participation.
