By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour, through the Belize Labour Department, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), has conducted a series of activities aimed at strengthening Belize’s labour dispute prevention and resolution mechanisms and improving access to labour justice.

The activities included a diagnostic assessment of the Labour Complaints Tribunal, facilitated by Pablo Arellano, Senior Specialist in Social Dialogue and Labour Relations at the ILO Regional Office. The programme also featured a regional knowledge-exchange session involving the Industrial Tribunal of The Bahamas, Belize’s Labour Complaints Tribunal and the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago, focusing on ways to improve labour dispute prevention and access to justice.

The programme further included specialized training for Labour Department technical officers and representatives of employers’ and workers’ organizations.

Participants received practical training in negotiation and conciliation techniques, including interest-based negotiation, effective questioning, reframing, paraphrasing, body language and managing emotions, with role-play exercises used to strengthen their ability to resolve workplace conflicts.

The Ministry said the activities form part of its broader efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Labour Department and Labour Complaints Tribunal and promote fair and effective labour dispute resolution.
