By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Bella Vista Village woman who bolted from a police station moments after an officer kindly loosened her handcuffs has been recaptured two weeks later, spotted at a village bar, and formally charged with escaping from lawful custody.
According to the Belize Police Department, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at about 6:40 p.m., the woman was in custody at the Bella Vista Police Sub Station for possession of a controlled drug and possession of a pipe, with charges yet to be laid.
She was in handcuffs but complained they were too tight, and an officer loosened them. Because the cell block was full, holding only male occupants at the time, she was placed on a seat while another officer prepared her custody record and acknowledgement form.
That was when she made her move, running out of the police station. Officers pursued, but the chase proved fruitless as she fled through the bushes.
The trail stayed quiet for nearly two weeks. Then, on Friday, August 14, an officer saw the woman at a bar in Bella Vista Village, where she was apprehended, detained, and escorted back to the very station she had fled.
On Saturday, August 15, at 6:30 a.m., police formally arrested and charged Riccy Bonilla, a 32-year-old unemployed woman of Bella Vista Village, with the offence of escaping from lawful custody.
