By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton has issued a Sunday message celebrating what she calls a strong wave of civic engagement across the nation, days after Cabinet withdrew support for BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet.
“Your voice matters. Speaking truth to power matters. How our country is governed matters,” the Albert area representative wrote, giving thanks for “every Belizean who has risked so much to speak out, stand up, and to actively champion a more productive Belize.”
Panton’s honour roll named the coalition that stood against the deal: the BCCI, the NTUCB and its Governing Council, the NGOs, NEAB, the Council of Churches, members of the independent media, “our great United Democratic Party,” and every citizen who raised concerns on social media or peacefully protested. “We See You. We Hear You. We Appreciate You,” she wrote.
The opposition leader then turned the moment forward. “Corruption and the abuse of public office remain serious concerns,” she charged, calling on Belizeans to remain informed, vigilant and engaged, and to press for transparency, accountability and good governance “until those responsible are held to account.”
“We should never underestimate the power of an engaged citizenry,” Panton wrote. “We maintain that power belongs in the hands of the people.”
The message closed with Sunday blessings for the nation, signed One Love.
