By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of Enterprise Henry Charles Usher says the government remains focused on preventing illegal activities in the Corozal Free Zone while strengthening the facility as an important economic hub for northern Belize.
Usher said the government is aware of concerns surrounding activities in the zone and is maintaining regular patrols while working with international partners.
Usher said the government continues to monitor the Free Zone and collaborate with authorities in neighboring countries to address potential illegal activities.
“We have to make sure that there’s nothing illegal happening in there, that we continue to have regular patrols in the zone, outside the zone to make sure that there are no illegal activities happening,” he told 7News Belize.
At the same time, Usher emphasized that the Free Zone remains a significant source of employment and economic activity for the country.
He noted that approximately 3,000 people work in the zone, with 333 businesses currently operating there. “The free zone is an important economic area for the country, especially for the north,” Usher said.
The minister said maintaining the balance between economic development and security will require continued cooperation with Belize’s international and regional partners.
